Numerous studies have highlighted the benefits of play-based learning, showing that it is essential for children's cognitive, social, and emotional development:
When children are engaged in enjoyable activities, they are more likely to be actively involved in their learning process, leading to better retention and understanding.
(Piaget, J. (1973). To Understand is to Invent: The Future of Education.)
When children are having fun and playing, they are more motivated to explore, experiment, and learn. Incorporating play-based elements into educational activities can enhance children's learning experiences and outcomes.
When children are enjoying themselves and having fun, their brains release neurotransmitters like dopamine, which can improve their ability to focus, retain information, and make connections.
Recognising this, the Super Self Defence program is built on the pillars of entertainment, and education: having fun, and teaching children the valuable skill of self-defence.

The Super Self Defence Program combines the fun of entertainment with education to teach the valuable tools of self-defence in a fun and friendly way!
Looking for traditional children's entertainment?
Each performance mixes entertainment with self-defence techniques, with an aim to teach children these skills in a friendly environment.
For example, a wrist grab defence is one of the most important defences for a child to learn. Explaining the dangers of why this is important may be scary for some kids.
But, if it's Spiderman telling a story:
"One day I was helping someone in the community, but a bad guy showed up to try to stop me!
They grabbed my wrist, and I used this defence to get out of it and save the day!"
This way, your child can learn the skill (and practice it with you at home too), all whilst having a tonne of fun with Spiderman!
I also explain the importance of values like self-control. Sometimes a child can learn a self-defence skill, like how to punch or kick, only to go and start hitting other kids in the playground. That's not good for anyone. During the event, I continually establish the importance of the values such as awareness, consideration, kindness, and confidence.
If you'd like to find out more about the techniques or values we teach on, please reach out through an Expression of Interest form.
Alternatively, you can check out What's Super Self Defence to see a more detailed list of some of the activities we facilitate.
Super Self Defence does not cater for events in relation to decorations, food or booking a venue.
At Super Self Defence our goal is to entertain and teach real-world skills that promote general safety and well-being.
It's therefore recommend that children be 7 years or older to participate.
Any younger than this, and it's unlikely that the information shared in the performance will be retained.
If you're looking to hold an event for a child under 7, check out the options at Little Bird Parties, where the fun has no age limit!
I have extensive experience in both the children's entertainment industry, and training in the martial arts space.
I began my martial arts journey in 2010, studying Tae Kwon Doe and progressing to blue belt. Since then, I have spent time gathering experience in other martial arts, including Kickboxing and Brazilian Jiujitsu. My experience in these spaces is not as extensive, yet they have provided me with an understanding of the fundamentals of those martial arts.
Most recently, I've trained with Krav Maga Systems. Krav Maga has given me the most experience in relation to my understanding of realistic and practical self defence. KMS teaches wholistic self defence principles, which I have been able to adapt and utilise in building Super Self Defence. During my time training with Krav Maga Systems, I also gained martial arts teaching experience, by supporting the staff to assist and lead the kids training classes.
I continue to learn and grow my knowledge in the self-defence space, to be able to best share the most important and relevant information here through my ministry at Super Self Defence.
Some of the themes of our events include:
- Army-themed bootcamps
- Superhero-themed training
- Ninja-themed events

Absolutely! We'll work together to create an event that aligns with your vision, and your child's interests.
And when it comes to the big day, you can be involved in the performance as much (or as little) as you like! This can mean glancing over as you take some well deserved time to relax with other parents, or being a sidekick as a part of the show!
Great question! The size of the space needed for the event is going to depend on how many children are going to be participating. A couple of kids? A small backyard can work! More than a few? The bigger the space, the better! A good measure is a 1m x 1m block for each child participating, as it facilitates enough space for each child to practice. Some games and drills will not be available if this space is not provided.
To talk more about event spacing, you can reach out through an Expression of Interest.
Generally, we require a booking to be made 3 weeks in advance of the day of your event. It's recommended that you to make an Expression of Interest as soon as you have an idea of the general concept.
Bookings can fill out fast, especially during holiday seasons, so reach out and we can lock in your ideal date!
If your event is going to be outdoors, it's a good idea to plan ahead in case storms are predicted on the day. Lighter showers are something we can work with, but hailstones and thunder? Let's plan ahead for it together!

I have extensive experience working in both the children's entertainment industry and martial arts space. Currently I train alongside Chief Instructor Kurt Coplan of Krav Maga Systems. With over 20 years experience training and teaching self-defence, Kurt has a depth of knowledge in adaptive techniques including training with law enforcement. His extensive background has proved helpful for me on my martial arts journey. Prior to training with Kurt, I have had experience in Taekwondo, Kickboxing and Brazilian Jiujitsu.
